We planned a trip for June to visit family in Lexington, Kentucky. We decided that we wanted to explore more of Kentucky on that trip, after our visit with my family. We researched places to go camping and came across Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area (LBL). It is 170,000 acres of land managed by the Forest Service. About half of this recreation area is in Western Kentucky and the other half is in Tennessee. We decided to check it out.
There are several campgrounds in LBL Kentucky. We decided to reserve a campsite on Energy Lake in Golden Pond, Kentucky. Since we have the Senior Pass, our rate was discounted. Energy Lake Campground is about five miles in from the main road. The drive to the campground was very wooded, but very nice! It seemed long because the speed limit was so low!
The campground itself is beautiful! We had a water view. Our site was on a hill, so we didn’t have access to the water. We had a pull-through site which was nicely shaded with lots of space between campsites.
This campground has a swimming area, playground, activity field, and canoe and kayak rentals. The boat launch is nearby in the day use area. There are hiking trails and paved roads. There are electric hookups in the RV area with potable water spigots around the campground to fill your freshwater tanks. There is a dump station and bath houses.
There are lots of things to do there. We visited the Golden Pond Visitor Center which had a gift shop and some interesting displays. We explored the area nearby and visited some of the towns around there.
We rode our bikes through the Wranglers Campground, which is part of LBL. They have great sites there too including a stall for your horse. There are lots of trails around there for horseback riding, hiking, and bike riding.
If you want to see bison and elk, you can drive around a nearby prairie, which is a natural preserve. There is lots of wildlife around there. We even saw some wild turkeys!
We enjoyed our stay here and I would highly recommend visiting LBL in Kentucky!
