Camping at Skidaway Island State Park in Georgia

Skidaway Island State Park is a beautiful campground conveniently located near Savannah, Georgia.  The sites at this park are very nice and shaded.  There are beautiful live oaks and Spanish moss trees throughout.  There are great hiking/biking trails, a boat ramp, and playgrounds. There is a nature center in the park that has interesting displays as well as nature programs for any age.

The campground is 15 miles from historic downtown Savannah, Georgia.  We explored Savannah while we were there.  We visited the historical area, Forsyth Park, River Street, the waterfront, and Bonaventure Cemetery.  The historical area has beautiful antebellum mansions and gorgeous historic homes.

Savannah is a great place to go biking as well. We decided to bike through Forsyth Park and see the iconic fountain. Great picture opportunity!  This is a visitor destination and was quite crowded with people taking pictures of this beautiful fountain.

We went to Savannah at the end of November and the weather was sunny and beautiful so we had an opportunity to enjoy the sites.  As you can see from the pictures, everything was still very green and beautiful!

Another fun place to visit was Tybee Island.  It is about 25 miles from Skidaway Island State Park.  We explored the island a bit and visited the Tybee Island Lighthouse.  Tybee Island has some beautiful beaches and is a great place to visit in the summer.  Since we were there during the month of November, we just walked around the area and took in the beautiful waterfront.  There is a neat museum in there that talks about the lighthouse and gives its history. There are shops, restaurants, and great views around the lighthouse area.

Bonaventure Cemetery is very historical and is the final resting place for one of Savannah’s iconic celebrities, Johnny Mercer.  He is known as the co-founder of Capitol Records as well as a singer/songwriter of songs such as "Moon River", "Hooray for Hollywood" and "Days of Wine and Roses".

We decided to ride around River Street in downtown Savannah.  We stopped in to see the market place and walk around on the docks to view the Savannah waterfront. Just beautiful!!
