One of our favorite parks in Florida is Tomoka State Park in Ormond Beach, Florida. We love Tomoka for its beauty and convenient location to the beaches--Ormond and Daytona.
We have been to this campground twice and have loved it each time. Once was in the summer and the other was in the winter. TAs you can see from my photos, Tomoka State Park campground has shaded sites with water and electric hookups. The canopy of trees is just beautiful. There is a dump station and bath houses. Lots of wildlife! You never know what you will see!
There is a boat ramp and fishing on the Halifax River and Tomoka River. You can fish off the pier or fish from a boat. We tried pier fishing and didn't have any luck. We took the kayaks with us and decided to try our luck at fishing from our kayaks. You need a Florida guest fishing license to fish in the rivers. The Halifax is brackish water. We used shrimp and caught some small fish. I caught 3 that day. They weren't very big, but I still had lots of fun!
It is a reasonable drive to St Augustine and the Ponce de Leon Inlet lighthouse. We were able to ride our bikes around the inlet and view the beautiful lighthouse.
We also visited St. Augustine, one of the oldest cities in the USA. This is the St. Augustine lighthouse. This historical town has a one-room schoolhouse, and many historical buildings that you can tour, or you can go to the beach and catch some sun. A must visit and a very easy drive from the campground!
We rode our bikes around Daytona Beach on New Year’s Day when we were staying at Tomoka. It was a nice crisp day and there were people on the beach dressed in all white singing and celebrating the New Year. It was fascinating!
There are many shops along the boardwalk in Daytona as well as different souvenir shops up and down the street. Daytona can get very crowded, but it was quite nice to ride around in the winter.
Tomoka has a great history. It was home to centuries of Native Americans dating back to 5000 BC. There are beautiful hiking and biking trails. There are many opportunities to observe wildlife. The West Indian manatee is an endangered species and is protected in the waters near Tomoka. You need to be careful when you are boating.
There is also a fully stocked camp store that offers snacks, camping supplies, and canoe/kayak rentals.
Truly a beautiful park. We will, definitely, go there again! There is always something to see and do!
